chemical peel aftercare.
Chemical peels are a powerful way to rejuvenate your skin, treat fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, and more. But the real magic happens after the treatment — if you follow the right chemical peel aftercare tips. Whether you’ve had a light, medium, or deep peel, proper aftercare can make the difference between irritated skin and a radiant glow.
In this post, we’ll break down the essential do’s and don’ts to follow after a chemical peel to ensure safe healing and maximize your results.
Why Aftercare Matters
A chemical peel works by exfoliating the outer layers of skin, triggering cell turnover and collagen production. This leaves your skin temporarily more sensitive, vulnerable to sun damage, and prone to irritation. Following the right aftercare routine helps:
Reduce redness and inflammation
Prevent scarring or hyperpigmentation
Speed up healing
Ensure long-lasting, glowing results
Chemical Peel Aftercare: The Do’s
1. Follow Your Provider’s Instructions Carefully
We will give you specific post-peel guidance based on the strength of your peel. Always stick to our plan (please with cherry on top!)
2. Keep Skin Moisturized
Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to support the healing process. Look for ingredients like:
Hyaluronic acid
Ceramides
Aloe vera
Avoid active ingredients (like retinol or acids) during this period.
3. Use Gentle Cleansers
Go for fragrance-free, gentle cleanser to clean your face. Do not scrub or use harsh tools like exfoliating brushes, polishes or pads.
4. Apply Broad-Spectrum SPF Daily
Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun. Use SPF 30+ (preferably mineral-based), even if you're indoors. Reapply every 2 hours if you're exposed to direct sunlight.
5. Stay Hydrated and Eat Skin-Friendly Foods
Drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E to support skin healing from the inside out.
6. Let the Skin Peel Naturally
It’s tempting to speed things up (for our pickers out there), but let your skin shed at its own pace. Picking or peeling prematurely can lead to scarring or uneven tone.
Chemical Peel Aftercare: The Don’ts
1. Don’t Pick, Rub, or Peel the Skin
Even if your skin is flaking or itchy — do not touch it! Picking can cause scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
2. Avoid Makeup (at Least for 24–48 Hours)
Give your skin time to breathe. Applying makeup too soon can cause irritation or clog your healing pores.
3. Skip the Gym and Saunas
Sweating can irritate freshly peeled skin. Avoid intense workouts, hot yoga, steam rooms, and saunas for at least 48–72 hours.
4. Don’t Use Active Skincare Ingredients
Put away products containing:
Retinol/Retinoids
AHA/BHA (like glycolic, salicylic acid)
Vitamin C (unless advised otherwise)
Wait until your provider clears you to resume your active skincare routine.
5. Avoid Direct Sunlight
Even with sunscreen, avoid direct sun exposure for several days. Use a hat and sunglasses if you need to be outdoors.
How Long Does Healing Take After a Chemical Peel?
Light Peels: 3–7 days
Medium Peels: 7–14 days
Deep Peels: 14–21+ days
Full healing and results may take a few weeks. Patience is key!
When to Call Your Med Spa
Contact your provider if you notice:
Excessive redness or swelling
Pus, blistering, or signs of infection
Unusual discomfort
Persistent peeling past 2+ weeks
A chemical peel can deliver smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin, but only if you take care of it properly afterward. So protect your investment and give your skin the best chance to glow.
