RF microneedling vs traditional microneedling.

When it comes to our favorite treatments that help with overall skin rejuvenation and anti-aging, microneedling and RF (radiofrequency) microneedling are two of our most popular treatments.  We love that we can offer both to our clients, but we often get a lot of questions about which is better, or which one would be better for certain skin concerns.  So, this week we want to break down the difference between the two and who is a good candidate for either one!

Traditional microneedling with our Skinpen is when we use fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures trigger the body’s natural healing process, which then cascades into a process that increases collagen and elastin production. Like we discussed this treatment is known for improving skin texture, reducing the appearance of fine lines, and minimizing acne scars.

RF microneedling, on the other hand, takes things a step further by combining traditional microneedling with the power of radiofrequency energy. As the needles penetrate the skin, they deliver heat deep into the dermis. This thermal energy enhances collagen remodeling and tightens the skin more effectively than microneedling alone. The result is a huge improvement in skin laxity, making RF microneedling especially beneficial for aging or sagging skin.

For acne scars and general texture concerns, regular microneedling can be a great option. It’s effective for those who want gradual, natural-looking improvements with minimal downtime. We love regular microneedling as maintenance treatments as well

However, if your concerns include deeper wrinkles, significant skin laxity, or more pronounced scarring, RF microneedling may be the better choice. The added heat promotes greater tissue tightening and regeneration, which can offer more dramatic results over fewer sessions.

Ultimately, the right treatment depends on your skin type, goals, and tolerance for downtime. While both treatments are minimally invasive, RF microneedling can involve slightly more redness and swelling due to the heat component.

As always consulting with one of our skincare professionals is the best way to determine which option will deliver the results you’re looking for—whether you're aiming to smooth, tighten, or refresh your skin you can’t go wrong with either!
